The 5 P’s Of A Cougars Training Session

As a youth basketball coach, creating a dynamic and effective training session requires more than just a whistle and a basketball. To elevate your coaching game, focus on the 5 Ps: Punctuality, Planning, Passion, Purpose, and Play. These elements form the foundation for a successful training session that not only develops skills but also fosters a love for the game.

1. Punctuality

The first P - punctuality - is often underestimated but crucial for setting the tone of your training session. Arriving early demonstrates professionalism and dedication, and it allows you to prepare the session to a high level. Paraphrasing Coach Carter… “If training starts at 6:00pm, as of 5:55pm you are late.” Players notice and appreciate a coach who values their time, fostering a positive and respectful team culture. And if a coach arrives late regularly, it becomes near impossible for that coach to hold players accountable to standards.

2. Planning

Effective planning is the backbone of any successful training session. Develop a structured practice plan that encompasses fundamental basketball skills, the McKinnon Style of Play, and team strategies. Using fast-paced activities of 7-9 minutes in length helps to promote an energy within the training session, and the activities you plan should be a blend

3. Passion

Passion is contagious, and as a coach, your enthusiasm for the game can inspire your players to give their best effort. Infuse energy into your training sessions by expressing genuine excitement about the concepts you are teaching and their improvement. Showcasing your love for basketball not only motivates players but also creates a positive and enjoyable atmosphere on the court. Just make sure you don’t confuse passion with anger, or let your passion turn into a win at all costs mentality where you compromise the development and enjoyment of your team.

4. Purpose

Every drill, exercise, or scrimmage should have a clear purpose. Define specific objectives for each segment of your training session, whether it's improving shooting accuracy, enhancing defensive skills, or building teamwork. Communicate these goals to your players before the session or the activity, helping them understand the purpose and how it is important to the team’s goals. This clarity not only focuses their efforts but also accelerates their overall development.

5. Play

While skill development is essential, integrating play into your training sessions adds an element of fun and excitement. Allow your players to engage in controlled scrimmage matches, incorporating the skills they've practiced. We want to be coaches, not choreographers, so create room within play for player creativity in applying the McKinnon Cougars style of play. Intersperse games with team huddles and time-outs that are player-driven, with the coach stepping back. Playing the game not only reinforces what they've learned but also cultivates a love for basketball, ensuring they stay committed and motivated throughout the season.

SUMMING UP

Focusing on the 5 Ps within your Rep or Domestic training session puts you in the best position to deliver engaging experiences to your players that

  • Optimise their skill development;

  • Address deficits in your team’s performance that will translate to improved results; and

  • Above all, are fun and keep players coming back for more.
